So, I noticed these little sparkles in my yard when I shined a flashlight on the grass at night. Sorry the image is a little blurry/shaky, but it’s hard to get a good shot when you’re holding a flashlight in one hand and taking a photo with the other…

I was curious what the shiny sparkles were, so I (the practical person that I am) went down into the yard, and took a closer look at the location where a few sparkly spots where… and this is what I saw.

It turns out, Wolf Spiders have eyes that glow like deer, dog’s or other animal’s eyes do when a light is shined on them. There eyes are very small, so you have to hold the flashlight close to your eyes so the reflection can be seen – so the angle of light going into their eye and reflecting back is very narrow.
Interesting little tidbit of information. If you have Wolf Spiders where you live, now you have a fun experiment to entertain the guests at your next party.
By the way, photographs were taken with my phone…
